A living record of Syon Park’s birdsong.

Syon Park is 200 acres of historic countryside surrounded by the city. Alauda is helping its team listen to that landscape around the clock.

the opportunity

Making time for the natural history of the Estate.

Syon Park has a great diversity of habitat in a relatively small area and is of considerable ecological interest.

But the team are not ecologists, and the day job takes up most of their time. There was little opportunity to research the natural history of the Estate in the detail it deserved.

Alauda offered a practical way to begin: a listening post that could keep recording while the team got on with caring for the landscape.

the installation

Set up once. Keep listening.

The sensor took about ten minutes to install. All it needed was Wi-Fi and a power supply. Since then, it has been recording birdsong continuously and identifying the species being heard.

  • Connects to the site’s existing Wi-Fi
  • Records and identifies birdsong around the clock
  • Builds a lasting record the team can return to

in their words

“At the moment we’re still thinking about what to do with this information — there’s a significant amount of data being recorded, but whether it's a live display at our Visitor Centre, or something more scientific, it’s definitely an exciting new feature.”
